The official Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon pool is moved

Following its policy of versions, Ubuntu has moved the official Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 pool to its area for previous versions.

If the Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10 pools are activated in the installation repositories of LliureX 8.09, or in any of its adaptations, the corresponding lines must be modified following the previous versions pattern:

LliureX 8.09 r1 Updates Available

At the Downloading section, the updates of the different LliureX 8.09 adaptations are available. These updates incorporate changes and new functions for the version 8.09. Some of them facilitate the use of ITACA (the managing software for centers), complete the PMB (the managing software for libraries) and so on.

LliureX Lite: new LliureX 8.09 adaptation for low output computers

LliureX 8.09 Lite

LliureX 8.09 Lite is an adaptation of the LliureX distribution with less hardware requirements. That is why, it enables the reuse of low output machines without the minumum requirements for its use as an independient LliureX desktop work station.

A live CD will be distributed to provide service to machines that don't have a DVD player and as it is lighter it doesn't require too much space in the physical memory.

Education promotes the reclycling of 3.000 computers at the classrooms during the academic year 2008-09

A lighter LliureX version enables to reuse computers in order to decrease technological refuse. The call for requesting servers to create Recicla'ls classrooms is open to the schools.

Valencia (16-3-09).- The Conseller d'Educació, Alejandro Font de Mora, made public that the Conselleria de Educación promotes, thought the Recicla’ls campaign, the recycling of aproximately 3.000 computers at the education centers during the academic year 2008-09. The objective of this campaign is to reuse the computers installed at the education centers to decrease the volume of technological refuse.

Font de Mora, who informed about the start of second phase, pointed that the Valencian education system owns more than 92.000 computers. This places the Community second in the Spanish ranking with regard to the average of computers per student. He also remarked that because of an important number of replacements, between 10.000 and 15.000 computers per year, a great amount of technological refuse is generated.

Valencia (4-1-09) .- More than 250,000 students are learning other languages with the tool Lliurex Lab in laboratories located at the public educational centers in the Comunitat. This tool has been introduced in the new version of Lliurex (8.09) and promoted by the Conselleria d'Educació. It began to be distributed last November.

Education launches EduSIG, a tool for supporting geography teaching at educational centers

Valencia (6-1-09) .- The Conselleria d'Educació has launched the application EduSIG, an educational free software integrated in LliureX to support geography teachers.

As the general director for Educational Technological Innovation, Sofia Bellés, explained "EduSIG is a free software application with a geographic information system to support the Geography teaching".

The new LliureX version registered over 16,000 downloads since its launch in November

Lliurex 8.09 includes more than 200 applications that meet the different needs for the educational areas.

Valencia (2-1-09) .- The new LliureX version has registered over 16,000 downloads since its launch last November during the “3rd Free Software Congress” and will be soon distributed in the Comunitat, as Sofia Belles, the general director for Educational Tecnological Innovation, disclosed..

LliureX 8.09 Desktop Customization for USB devices

LliureX 8.09 customization,which can be booted from the Live USB given to attendants of the 3rd Conference on Free Software, Region of Valencia, is already available for download.

This customization is a LLiureX Desktop version which also includes an estimated 500MB FAT partition as well as the user home (ext3). This way, using the Live mode becomes easier and data persistence is guaranteed.

LliureX 8.09 Customization for Pre-School Education

Lliurex 8.09 customization for Pre-school and first years Primary education is already available to be downloaded.

This customization is specially suited for these first stages of education. It includes a desktop with sidebars displaying all the applications available and a central area for executing them.

It also adds a wide range of educational resources and activities to be used in the classroom.

LliureX 8.09 customization for Libraries

The customized version of LLiureX distribution for Libraries in educational centres was released on the occasion of the 3rd Conference on Free Software, event organised by Conselleria d'Educació and held on the 5th, 6th and 7th November in Alicante.
This application, called PMB, comes with a web interface which allows libraries control. Tasks such as cataloging, finding and borrowing books and, generally talking, any task related to libraries use and management can be performed using the PMB application.

The Councillor of Education presents the “3rd International Conference on Free Software . Region of Valencia

Alejandro Font de Mora, Councillor of Education, has presented the 3rd International Conference on Free Software-Region of Valencia which will be held at the Congress Center of Alicante on the 5th, 6th and 7th of November.

III Congreso

Alejandro Font de Mora has pointed out that LliureX shall be deployed in 60.000 computers belonging mainly to the education network within four years. All the state Valencian centres have already Lliurex available in some of their computers. Furthermore, more than 5.000 Infant LliureX Classroom Models have been implemented and 5.200 teachers have followed a training program. These improvements have allowed the regional government a 22 million euro savings on licences.

The Councillor also stated that LliureX includes 200 applications in Valencian language, it means, students from the Valencian Region shall be able to follow theri computing studies in their vernacular language and not only in Spanish or English.

LliureX adds TCOSmonitor

TCOS is an open source project which provides an integrated system of thin clients allowing control over both thin and thick clients. The project has been developed in Spain and it won the 1st University Competition of Free Software in 2007.

TCOS is a LliureX-based micro operating system which is served through PXE protocol for terminals with low resources which are started from network and connected to the server's graphic entourage where applications are held and run.

LliureX has actively participated in the development of this project. Among some of the input, it is important to point out features related to remote control of thin and class clients, audio visual multimedia support and USB extreme drives for thin clients. Needs to be metioned as well the customization and fitting to the needs of the teachers at all levels all around the Valencian region.

Sofia Bellés attends the 2nd Guademy 2008

Sofía Bellés, Head of the Department of Technology for Innovation and Education, has taken part in the opening ceremony of the 2nd GUADEMY 2008 which has been held at the Polytechnic University of Valencia today.

Along with Sofia Bellés on behalf of the Valencian Government, the event was graced with the presence of Juan Miguel Martínez Rubio as the deputy vice-chancellor of the student body and the exchange program of the UPV ( Polytechnic University of Valencia), René Martín from the University's Free Software Office of La Laguna and José Ernesto Suárez as PoLinuX Chairman.
